Recap of a Worthy Biopic

Featured

tlc-20-album-artwork-400x400CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story broke records when it first premiered on October 21. Over 4.5 million people watched the movie, making it the highest rated cable movie of 2013 and launching it to the top as VH1’s most watched original movie of all time.

Whether you were a young girl in the 90s and sang along to every verse as if you were Chilli on stage at the Grammys or whether you don’t even have the slightest idea of who they are, we highly recommend this inspiring movie. TLC has an amazing and touching story that is worth learning about and is definitely worth sharing.

The trio, who have several Grammy awards (among other titles and awards), had a unique chemistry that caught the attention of millions. With Chilli’s classic R & B voice, T-Boz’s low and sultry tone, and Left Eye’s raps, it’s no wonder that they became the second bestselling female group of all time (behind the Spice Girls).

All of their trials and struggles were identified in this biopic, including the truth behind their bankruptcy, which undoubtedly and controversially threw their record label owner, Pebbles, under the bus. Also featured in the film is T-Boz’s struggle with Sickle Cell, Chilli’s relationship issues with producer Dallas Austin and her subsequent abortion, and the many escapades of Lisa Lopes.

Of course the movie goes as far as Lisa’s tragic death, but it does end with a gleam of hope, as T-Boz and Chilli record their newest single, Meant to Be, honoring the group as a whole and remembering Lisa as the fun, quirky, and creative member of TLC.

If you haven’t had a chance to watch the film, keep a lookout for it on VH1 or check their website for listings, and definitely go download TLC’s new single. We are loving it!

In loving memory of Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes.

Horrible Bosses and How to Deal

Have you ever had an evil boss who seems to hate you for some unknown reason and who sabotages your work life even though you’re doing everything right? If you have not experienced this yet, wait for it–you will (though we sincerely hope that you won’t). Once you’re finally freed from this misery, you’ll look back and realize that you actually learned a lot during that period in hell.

Until then, however, you’re suffering; and we came up with a few tips to help you out during this time:

1. Document everything. Follow up conversations with an email that starts, “Per our conversation…” If for whatever reason you cannot send an email, create a Word doc and write down every detail of what’s happening on a daily basis. This way if anything comes up, you have a detailed log complete with dates and times that shows what was requested and what was completed.

Play nice
. The expression, you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar proves true. Be extra nice to your boss, who may or may not resemble a fly. The last thing you want is to give him or her more ammo. Be cordial–maybe throw in an overly-nice, borderline sarcastic comment here and there just for fun–and remember that this is not going to last forever. It’s a phase; a right of passage.

3. Get out of there ASAP. Apply for other jobs. Sure, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side, but when you’re in a situation where your boss is out to get you, you’re in dead grass that’s shriveled, brown, and dirty; you’ll likely find greener pastures.

The same way that awesome jobs are hard to find, excellent employees are hard to find, and the great companies know this. Keep your head up, stay confident, and know that you will soon move onto bigger and better things.

7 Worthy Tips to Help You Land that Job

Featured

You’ve got your dream job lined up, you just need to nail that interview. How do you do it? Show the interviewer that you are professional, reliable, and motivated with these helpful tips.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

1. Be confident. This is number one on the list for a reason. You want to make a great first impression, and you want the interviewer to feel assured in your ability to handle the job’s tasks. You went to school, you learned the material, you know you got this–just make sure that they know it too.

2. Do your homework. Learn about the company–their history, their values, and their structure.

3. Create an elevator speech. This is a thirty second spiel about yourself. Talk very briefly about your degrees, your past experience, what skills you’ve obtained from both of those, and why you want the job in question. It’s great to touch on where you are headed professionally and your long term career aspirations–this shows that you are motivated.

4. Turn your weakness into a strength. How did you learn from your weakness, and what are you doing to improve it?

5. Be humble when describing your strengths. Speak about how you discovered them, and don’t be overconfident.

file00010119859026. Ask what benefits the company can offer you. As much as the company is trying to find the right employee among many candidates, you are aiming to find the right company. If a business can’t offer what it is that you require, know that there is a company out there that can.

7. Ask follow up questions. You’ll want to know what comes next, such as when you can expect to hear from the interviewer, and if there will be a second interview. This also shows the interviewer that you know how to take initiative and that you don’t leave things hanging.

We hope that these 7 lucky tips help you snag that job!

Five Minute Face

Featured

We know how it goes–you stayed up too late watching reruns of your favorite show, so you snooze five times in the morning. It’s 7:00am and you’re late.

Photo: Glamour.com

You frantically throw your hair into a ponytail, in the hopes that you’re pulling off the red carpet look that Selena Gomez showed off at last week’s premiere. As you catch a glimpse of yourself rushing by the mirror, however, you see a messy up-do that could’ve been styled by your five-year-old niece.

With your messy hair, your wrinkled pants, and your all natural face, you stampede towards your car and pray that you don’t have to make conversation with too many people at work today.

All of us have days like this, and here’s how you pull off a five minute transformation:

  1. Powder foundation (1:45) – Dab some on your eyelids and around the eye area to fool people into thinking you’ve had eight hours of sleep, and then brush it all over your face.
  2. Bronzer (:20) – Brush this on your cheekbones, forehead, and chin to make your gorgeous features shine like the early morning sun.
  3. Eyeliner (1:00) – Essential for making tired eyes seem awake and happy. I prefer black, but brown will work too if you want a softer look.
  4. Mascara (1:45–spend time making them perfect) – Never leave the house without mascara. Ever. Eyelashes are the most distinctive feminine feature, and mascara makes an incredible difference. If you can only complete one step from this list, this is the one to chose.
  5. Lips (:10) – Whether you use balm, gloss, or lipstick, moisturize those cuties! Adding some color or gloss will complete your look, transforming your face from dull and tired to bright and lively.

There you have it! Now, if only you could hook up your coffee to an IV.

Social Media, Meet Fashion.

IMG_4512We are loving this new app that brings social media and fashion together like never before. PINXTER is a hub where fashionistas like us can go to help each other out, voting YES or NO on other user’s outfits and voting on top brands like Converse, Urban Decay, and Louis Vuitton.

How many times have you been in a fitting room utterly undecided between two favorite finds or unsure of whether your current party dress is a fashion forward risk or a fashion flop? Post a photo of your fashion dilemma to PINXTER and get plenty of unbiased opinions on your fashion choices. Were you best dressed at your friend’s bridal shower last week? Post a photo of your outfit, your hair, and your accessories to find out what people really think of your ensemble.

IMG_4511The points system makes this app super addicting and really fun. Get diamonds by rating pictures and then use them to promote your own fashion photos to get even more votes! I think Pinterest has met its match in the fashion world.

In its first two months alone, PINXTER had over 7 million votes! That’s a ton of opinions, and it’s only going to get better! This app is growing fast and by the end of the month will have full user profiles and official brand pages, allowing you to search, vote, and even purchase items from your favorite brands.

We love this app so much that we will actually be using it to choose our best and worst dressed celeb at the Primetime Emmy Awards airing on September 22! Get the app to vote on your favorite and not-so-favorite looks, and then check back here to see who made the cut!

Social Media: Quality over Quantity

Featured

Many believe that the way to make an impact with social media is by having the greatest number of followers; but if your followers are not interested in your blog, your website, or your business, then what good are they? More success will be evident when you focus on the quality of your friends and followers, rather than the volume.

The people who you associate with make an impression on your overall reputation and appearance. If you are following several writers on Twitter and LinkedIn, you likely have a serious interest in writing, and the same is true for any career path or interest.

However, if you are following the people who have “I follow back” or “want more followers?” in their profile bio, then the credibility for your own Twitter is significantly reduced for those who are serious about networking.

When used strategically, social networking can be very valuable for entrepreneurs, job seekers, or hobbyists. It is like word of mouth–which many of us know to be the most effective form of advertising–only it’s easier, more effective, and more powerful.

Enjoy your time on the Internet and make it meaningful. Do not follow people just to hope that they follow you back, and do not go out there looking for a greater number of followers or connections. Obtain quality contacts who give great recommendations, have similar interests, and care about what you have to offer. Don’t just get followers, get networks.
