Five Minute Face

We know how it goes–you stayed up too late watching reruns of your favorite show, so you snooze five times in the morning. It’s 7:00am and you’re late.

You frantically throw your hair into a ponytail, in the hopes that you’re pulling off the red carpet look that Selena Gomez showed off at last week’s premiere. As you catch a glimpse of yourself rushing by the mirror, however, you see a messy up-do that could’ve been styled by your five-year-old niece.

With your messy hair, your wrinkled pants, and your all natural face, you stampede towards your car and pray that you don’t have to make conversation with too many people at work today.

All of us have days like this, and here’s how you pull off a five minute transformation:

  1. Powder foundation (1:45) – Dab some on your eyelids and around the eye area to fool people into thinking you’ve had eight hours of sleep, and then brush it all over your face.
  2. Bronzer (:20) – Brush this on your cheekbones, forehead, and chin to make your gorgeous features shine like the early morning sun.
  3. Eyeliner (1:00) – Essential for making tired eyes seem awake and happy. I prefer black, but brown will work too if you want a softer look.
  4. Mascara (1:45–spend time making them perfect) – Never leave the house without mascara. Ever. Eyelashes are the most distinctive feminine feature, and mascara makes an incredible difference. If you can only complete one step from this list, this is the one to chose.
  5. Lips (:10) – Whether you use balm, gloss, or lipstick, moisturize those cuties! Adding some color or gloss will complete your look, transforming your face from dull and tired to bright and lively.

There you have it! Now, if only you could hook up your coffee to an IV.

Social Media, Meet Fashion.

IMG_4512We are loving this new app that brings social media and fashion together like never before. PINXTER is a hub where fashionistas like us can go to help each other out, voting YES or NO on other user’s outfits and voting on top brands like Converse, Urban Decay, and Louis Vuitton.

How many times have you been in a fitting room utterly undecided between two favorite finds or unsure of whether your current party dress is a fashion forward risk or a fashion flop? Post a photo of your fashion dilemma to PINXTER and get plenty of unbiased opinions on your fashion choices. Were you best dressed at your friend’s bridal shower last week? Post a photo of your outfit, your hair, and your accessories to find out what people really think of your ensemble.

IMG_4511The points system makes this app super addicting and really fun. Get diamonds by rating pictures and then use them to promote your own fashion photos to get even more votes! I think Pinterest has met its match in the fashion world.

In its first two months alone, PINXTER had over 7 million votes! That’s a ton of opinions, and it’s only going to get better! This app is growing fast and by the end of the month will have full user profiles and official brand pages, allowing you to search, vote, and even purchase items from your favorite brands.

We love this app so much that we will actually be using it to choose our best and worst dressed celeb at the Primetime Emmy Awards airing on September 22! Get the app to vote on your favorite and not-so-favorite looks, and then check back here to see who made the cut!

Social Media: Quality over Quantity

Many believe that the way to make an impact with social media is by having the greatest number of followers; but if your followers are not interested in your blog, your website, or your business, then what good are they? More success will be evident when you focus on the quality of your friends and followers, rather than the volume.

The people who you associate with make an impression on your overall reputation and appearance. If you are following several writers on Twitter and LinkedIn, you likely have a serious interest in writing, and the same is true for any career path or interest.

However, if you are following the people who have “I follow back” or “want more followers?” in their profile bio, then the credibility for your own Twitter is significantly reduced for those who are serious about networking.

When used strategically, social networking can be very valuable for entrepreneurs, job seekers, or hobbyists. It is like word of mouth–which many of us know to be the most effective form of advertising–only it’s easier, more effective, and more powerful.

Enjoy your time on the Internet and make it meaningful. Do not follow people just to hope that they follow you back, and do not go out there looking for a greater number of followers or connections. Obtain quality contacts who give great recommendations, have similar interests, and care about what you have to offer. Don’t just get followers, get networks.

Always Rock Your Confident Shoes

Shoes are the staple of your outfit. They have the incredible ability to transform any look, and the right pair breeds confidence because you know you’re looking good when you strut around at your favorite event. You’re rocking those bad boys (or girls) and you know it. People are eying your swag, and you just can’t get enough.

Maybe you love those sneaks that you’ve been parading in since freshman year, or maybe you get a new pair of five inch heels every few months (or weeks), or maybe you just have to have those epic flats that remind you of Disney princesses. Whatever shoe you choose, it’s a shoe that brings you confidence and one that truly represents yourself.

The exact same outfit can be completely changed with the right shoes, allowing you to flaunt your varying moods whenever you so choose–professional, casual, or fashionista-to-the-max. If you’re going out after work with the girls or out on a date with your latest flame or longtime boo, swap out your pointed-toe black three inch heels for some studded red pumps or a pair of leopard-print flats, and viola, you’ve transformed yourself from successful business woman to drop dead gorgeous trendsetter.

Whether you are the sneakers type, the stilettos type, or even the type who doesn’t pay attention to what shoes you wear, know and realize that you are one with your shoes and that great shoes can significantly boost your confidence. Shoes are the most important element of any outfit and they can change your ensemble from cool and casual to eccentric and high fashion or anything in between.

Ultimately, your favorite pair of shoes will radiate your innermost personality, so choose instinctively.

These Alessia Solari sandals make us feel like we can take on the world! Which shoes make you feel confident?

The New World Trade Center

Each year, our hearts ache with the pain caused by the terrible events on September 11, 2001. Each year, we also feel united and we feel great pride for this beautiful country that we live in and for all of its courageous and amazing citizens.

As the years have passed, we have seen the evolution of the new World Trade Center; namely the Freedom Tower. Tower One is representatively 1,776 feet tall and is now America’s tallest building with the most innovative and green technology.

Almost ready to open its doors, this magnificent skyscraper ascends high above New York City’s skyline, and its nostalgic red, white, and blue lighting shines brilliantly in the night sky.

When completed, The World Trade Center complex will have 5 new towers, an expansive retail space, a transportation hub, a performing arts center, and a memorial museum.

The National 9/11 Memorial showcases two beautiful reflecting pools and features the name of every single person who passed in the 1993 terror attacks as well as the 2001 attacks. Eight acres of land is devoted to this memorial, and over 400 white oak trees will eventually grow to 60 feet around the area, creating a stunning landscape of bright jade in the summer and multicolored foliage in the fall.

Education and remembrance will be the focus of the Memorial Museum, which will have artifacts as little as personal items donated by victim’s families to seven-story columns that were retreived from the ruins.

One of the most unique features about the 9/11 Memorial Museum is that it is underground. The reason for this is to highlight the bedrock and foundation of the original Twin Towers which did not break despite the immense amount of force collapsing upon it.

Though America has suffered a tragedy that we will never truly heal from, we have become stronger, more resilient, more hopeful, and more united.

With the completion of this new landmark, the strength, hope, and resilience of Americans will be evident to future generations, and to the rest of the world, forever.

THE NEW GOLD STANDARD: New iPhones Make Their Debut

The titan of tech, Apple Computers has revealed the latest iteration of it’s flagship iPhone brand. The new phones may be a merely incremental innovation in the series but it will likely be a smashing success. Apple began it’s trade show with a “Colorful” line of cheaper versions of the iPhone. The IPhone 5C–comes in White, Blue, Yellow, Pink, Peach and Green, PLASTIC CASES. Apple, which is known for the Luxe feel of it’s glass covered phones has thus far eschewed Plastic as a construction material. This demand for luxury increased the price of iPhones, making them less affordable for the mass audience. The new plastic phones will have an entry price of $99 dollars for the 16 gigabit model and $199 for the 32gig model. Both prices are ofcourse-with a 2 year contract. The colorful presentation also meets a growing demand for personalization among iPhone users, as Nokia Windows phone and Android Phones have grown in appeal by offering colorful variants.

The crowning glory of the New iPhone line was displayed on “The Gold Standard”—a new metallic Gold Version of it’s phone (which also comes in Slate, Gold and Silver). The revolution in the new IPHONE 5S, was in Apple’s decision to kill the SWIPE TO UNLOCK feature for phones. Apple set the standard in swiping to unlock the home screen of phones. This often copied feature will be replaced on iPhones with “TOUCH-ID”–a finger print reader, built into the home button of Apple’s phone. Your fingerprints will now be used for App Authentication of Purchases and for security on your phones. “Passwords Are Cumbersome” became the phrase of the evening as Apple, once again outpaced it’s competitors. Critics will note that the Fingerprint technology is not new but Apple advocates will retort that neither was the concept of the MP3 player or the Smartphone. The brilliance of Apple has always been in refining existing technologies and executing them with unmatched style. With it’s 360 degree, 500 Pixel-sub epidermal imaging scanner built into the home button, Apple executes the existing technology with more precision than any other, to ensure a smooth and flashy experience.

The potential for App Purchasing, website portals and the elimination of admittedly frustrating passwords is likely enough to silent Apple critics and satisfy Apple Fanboys. The company also touted upgrades to it’s camera, allowing for 10 fps burst mode picture taking, 120 fps slow mode pictures and 28 Mega pixel panoramics-which nearly matche standard DSLR cameras.

The company also showed off it’s new IOS 7 operating system. The new operating system gives the iPhone an entirely new look and feel. Some might say, it gives the iPhone a “Windows like” style with it’s flat fonts and more muted color pallet. The complete redesign of the iPhone’s look, feel and operating system was precipitated by complaints from iPhone users that have grown weary and bored with the seemingly static look of their phones. Some have begun to migrate to Android, and Windows phones. When combined with the new colorful cases of the iPhone 5C , Nokia/Windows fans are pointing out the similarities between their old phones and the new style of Apple’s iPhone. Nokia reps even tweeted that “Imitation Is The Best Form of Flattery. Thanks Apple :)”

Whether Apple has taken a step towards the look of Windows/Android is largely irrelevant in a mobile market that routinely copies features among competitors.

The New iPhones are not revolutionary but they will certainly be enough to keep sales strong. Lines have been reported forming at Apple Stores already!

A Worthy Cause Breast Cancer Awareness

Culture, Editorial, Fashion, News

The strength of the human spirit is often difficult to describe. Normally it is something that can only be witnessed. When the world witnessed celebrities like Christina Applegate and Giuliana Rancic and most recently Angelina Jolie go head-to-head with Breast Cancer, we were reminded of how strong the human spirit can be in the darkest of times. As we enter the month of September, the magazine is preparing for the next issue and the month of October is all about giving back and Breast Cancer Awareness. So we wanted to compile a list of a few of our favorite Breast Cancer Awareness items to get you ready for October.

These items can be found on Lisa Leonard DesignsUnique Vintage and Our Gift of Time.

Breast cancer affects one in eight women during their lives. Breast cancer kills more women in the United States than any cancer except lung cancer. No one knows why some women get breast cancer, but there are a number of risk factors. Risks that you cannot change include

  • Age – the chance of getting breast cancer rises as a woman gets older
  • Genes – there are two genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, that greatly increase the risk. Women who have family members with breast or ovarian cancer may wish to be tested.
  • Personal factors – beginning periods before age 12 or going through menopause after age 55

Other risks include being overweight, using hormone replacement therapy (also called menopausal hormone therapy), taking birth control pills, drinking alcohol, not having children or having your first child after age 35 or having dense breasts.

Symptoms of breast cancer may include a lump in the breast, a change in size or shape of the breast or discharge from a nipple. Breast self-exam andmammography can help find breast cancer early when it is most treatable. Treatment may consist of radiation, lumpectomy, mastectomy, chemotherapy and hormone therapy.

Worthy Magazine will be promoting awareness and celebrating survivors of Breast Cancer. We would love for you to share your stories and comments with us.
