Horrible Bosses and How to Deal

Featured

Have you ever had an evil boss who seems to hate you for some unknown reason and who sabotages your work life even though you’re doing everything right? If you have not experienced this yet, wait for it–you will (though we sincerely hope that you won’t). Once you’re finally freed from this misery, you’ll look back and realize that you actually learned a lot during that period in hell.

Until then, however, you’re suffering; and we came up with a few tips to help you out during this time:

1. Document everything. Follow up conversations with an email that starts, “Per our conversation…” If for whatever reason you cannot send an email, create a Word doc and write down every detail of what’s happening on a daily basis. This way if anything comes up, you have a detailed log complete with dates and times that shows what was requested and what was completed.

Play nice
. The expression, you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar proves true. Be extra nice to your boss, who may or may not resemble a fly. The last thing you want is to give him or her more ammo. Be cordial–maybe throw in an overly-nice, borderline sarcastic comment here and there just for fun–and remember that this is not going to last forever. It’s a phase; a right of passage.

3. Get out of there ASAP. Apply for other jobs. Sure, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side, but when you’re in a situation where your boss is out to get you, you’re in dead grass that’s shriveled, brown, and dirty; you’ll likely find greener pastures.

The same way that awesome jobs are hard to find, excellent employees are hard to find, and the great companies know this. Keep your head up, stay confident, and know that you will soon move onto bigger and better things.

7 Worthy Tips to Help You Land that Job

You’ve got your dream job lined up, you just need to nail that interview. How do you do it? Show the interviewer that you are professional, reliable, and motivated with these helpful tips.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

1. Be confident. This is number one on the list for a reason. You want to make a great first impression, and you want the interviewer to feel assured in your ability to handle the job’s tasks. You went to school, you learned the material, you know you got this–just make sure that they know it too.

2. Do your homework. Learn about the company–their history, their values, and their structure.

3. Create an elevator speech. This is a thirty second spiel about yourself. Talk very briefly about your degrees, your past experience, what skills you’ve obtained from both of those, and why you want the job in question. It’s great to touch on where you are headed professionally and your long term career aspirations–this shows that you are motivated.

4. Turn your weakness into a strength. How did you learn from your weakness, and what are you doing to improve it?

5. Be humble when describing your strengths. Speak about how you discovered them, and don’t be overconfident.

7. Ask follow up questions. You’ll want to know what comes next, such as when you can expect to hear from the interviewer, and if there will be a second interview. This also shows the interviewer that you know how to take initiative and that you don’t leave things hanging.

We hope that these 7 lucky tips help you snag that job!
