DJANGO UNCHAINED started as a questionable concept for a spaghetti western but it is turned into one of the most anticipated films of the year. Early reviews are also suggesting that it is one of the best films of the year. While details are sparse, DJANGO seems to be receiving rave reviews and delighting audiences. Most have come away in awe of the sheer violence in the rated R-epic and at the incredible cinematography of Tarantino’s effort. The actors are also all in contention for significant acclaim. In the early buzz, Leonardo DiCaprio was considered a lock-for nominations however, his co-stars are stealing the show in the eyes of early viewers. It is never easy to star opposite Samuel L. Jackson but many are suggesting that he is the surprising best performance in the film. Christoph Walz, who spends most of the film opposite Jamie Foxx as the bounty hunter that recruits Foxx in a mission of revenge is also gaining unexpected attention for his performance. Some are suggesting that the trio could all walk away with awards this season.
The St. Louis critics have nominated the film for Best Picture, Best Lead Actor (Jaime Foxx), Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Chritoph Waltz), Best Music, Best Cinematography, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Scene.
The San Diego critics have nominated DJANGO for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz), Best Cinematography, Best Ensemble, and Best Original Screenplay.
After seeing the film, Criterion Corner’s David Ehrlich tweeted, “DJANGO UNCHAINED: holy s***. brutally hilarious spaghetti comedy does for business what Basterds did for war. Best American film of 2012.”
DJANGO UNCHAINED is currently nominated for outstanding motion picture trophy at the NAACP Image Awards.
