A Worthy Guide For Picking Your Signature Cocktail

Signature style is important. It helps to define your taste and set you apart from everybody else. So what makes your signature cocktail any different? Knowing what you like and dislike is key, especially when it comes to your drink(s). When going out on a date do you frantically reach for the drink menu or do you tell the bartender your drink of choice with confidence. You don’t want to ask for a “surprise drink” or you’re sure to be disappointed by the sweet Vodka concoction the bartender is going to make you. With endless amounts of cocktails and specialty drinks out there mixing it up is easy, however there are some great fallback drinks when a drink menu is nowhere in site (and no a Vodka Cranberry is not one of them).

Strong Yet Sweet Martinis

Martinis: The classiest of the cocktails. A martini ensures that your cocktail isn’t being loaded with sugary juices and mixers, all while looking sophisticated and beverage savvy. Being that a martini is the strongest drink one can order at a bar, they can still be tasty and bearable. If you’re looking for a sour drink, go with a Green Apple or a Lemon Drop. A girl’s night out calls for a Sex and the City traditional cocktail, the Cosmo. While some find the Cosmo outdated and “totally 90’s” I think that it’s a good upgrade for the boring Vodka and Cranberry drinker, with a guaranteed kick. The Pomegranate Martini is another fun and pink cocktail that is sweet yet strong for girls’ nights around the nation.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with your martins but when ordering, know what you’re talking about. Most specialty martinis are crafted with Vodka, yet a traditional martini is with Gin. Dirty=Olives, if you don’t enjoy olives do not order dirty. Extra Dry or straight up=liquor. Unless you want a fancy glass with chilled vodka or gin you shouldn’t be ordering this.  If you’re hesitant with what you like in a martini, stick to some of these fallbacks that no bartender can mess up and you will enjoy.

Fun and Tropical

Tropical drinks are not only for vacations anymore. These drinks are for someone who doesn’t want to necessarily taste their alcohol, but have confidence that it’s there. Popular Rum Tropical drinks include the Bahama Mama and the Mai Tai. These fun and fruity drinks are filled with different rums, liquors, juices, and both are topped with dark rum floaters. Although they may not frequent many drink menus, the ingredients are common and carried at most bars. If you’re a Vodka fan there are tropical drinks for you to choose as well. Everyone knows the traditional Sex on the Beach (and yes, everyone smirks while ordering) but to mix it up try a Bay Breeze or Sea Breeze. While these drinks are basic, they add some flavor to your traditional Vodka and juice drinks that people frequently order. If you’re a fan of the popular 5-liquor drink the Long Island, try a Long Beach to add some sweetness. It’s essentially the same drink, yet with a little cranberry instead of sour mix. You don’t have to wait until vacation anymore to enjoy your paradise cocktail.

Traditional

While the mojito and the margarita may be some of the most common drinks known to man, people often hesitate to order them! If you enjoy a fresh mojito don’t be afraid to order it, they take time to prepare but it’s part of the job. Mojito’s are great drinks to pair with dinners or just to have while out and about with friends. With no mixers in them, mojitos can also be very low calorie (tip: If ordering a fresh mojito, ask your bartender to use a sugar substitute instead of simple syrup for a healthy mojito) yet just as tasty as sugary cocktails. Margaritas are also a great fallback cocktail, and if you want to mix it up try asking for a Pomegranate Margarita. Skinny Margarita’s are equally as good if you’re looking for a healthier alternative (simply: tequila, agave, and lime juice topped off with soda water- no sour mix).  If you want a basic yet flavored cocktail, pair flavored Vodka with soda water or lemonade. By sitting down and ordering a “Stoli Raspberry with Soda” you’re putting your own spin on cocktail and it’s also a drink that will never let you down. Plus Vodka flavors are endless and they just keep coming out with more. Bartenders appreciate a confident customer who knows what they want, so don’t be intimidated to ask.

On the other hand, there are some drinks that should only be ordered under certain circumstances. Frozen drinks such as Daiquiris and PiñaColadas are great drinks… when you’re lying at a pool. Ordering a frozen drink like this is a guaranteed for a weak and sugar filled drink. You’re sooner to get brain freeze then you are a buzz. Go for a Rum Runner on the rocks instead of these frozen concoctions and do yourself and your bartender a favor. Mimosas and Bloody Mary’s are great for brunches and hangovers, however after 5pm you just look silly ordering them at a bar.  Try a tequila sunrise or maybe a screwdriver instead for a similar evening drink.

Going out for cocktails is a way that we socialize with others. Knowing what to order and your fallback drink is important no matter who you are. Educate yourself and experiment to find your cocktail of choice. Once you find your signature cocktail, you’ll wish you had it all along. Drink responsibly and always be sure your cocktail is drink-worthy.

BirchBox Is It Worth It

Every month, there’s that one little thing I look forward to receiving in the mail. No it’s not my outstanding credit card bills or the reminder to visit the eye doctor. It’s my BirchBox; it’s my little sample-sized savior of beauty products to obsess over for the next few weeks. I’m notorious for being that girl in line who wonders off 1,000 times to look at the little goodies surrounding the registers. With BirchBox, it’s as if all of those fun-sized minis are being sent directly to me all for $10 a month. Every month and every box is different, which makes swapping products with my roommates BirchBox that much easier. From an assortment of 4-5 items such as hair products, makeup, perfumes, and skin care all the perfect size for a true test run of various products and brands. Conveniently, they sell all of the full size products on the website for each box you have received, which trust me you’ll find some great gems. My September box, which was BirchBox’s anniversary month contained, Dr. Jart + Black Charcoal Sheet Mask, Perlier Shea Lavender Body Balm, Pixi Butter Lip Balm, Davines Hair Oil, and Tocca Eau de Parfum, all packaged in an adorable kaleidoscope box. BirchBox has encouraged me to try products that I’ve never tried before. My first life changing experience with dry shampoo was all credit to a sample in my BirchBox. One thing’s for sure, my box never seems to let me down, and it won’t let you down either.

Worthy Feature Jennifer Lee Segale of Garden Apothecary

Featured

GARDEN

In preparation for our upcoming issue, which is the beauty issue, we figured we would sit down with some amazing entrepreneurs from here to California to talk about the latest in trust-worthy luxury skin care. Up first is the founder of Garden Apothecary. Jennifer Lee Segale offers organic and handmade products for the most indulgent body care regiment. We got a chance to speak with the the lady with the chic green thumb who also has a background in botany and all we have to say is what a worthy woman and business feature.  One look at her organic skin care treats and we promise we think you will fall in love. We have our eye on a few of her products.

_MG_4258

Please tell me more about Garden Apothecary what separates you from other organic products that are out there?

My professional background in botany makes Garden Apothecary stand tall above other organic bath and beauty products. We not only create unique, organic products – but we use whole botanicals from sustainable farms, as well as herbs that we grow. For example, our Vanilla + Balsam sugar scrub contains an entire vanilla bean (Vanilla plantifolia) in the jar. You are not just getting fragrance from essential oils, you are getting the healing properties from the botanicals within the product. What prompted you to create your own products?

Our skin is our largest organ, and I wanted to create a line that honored my relationship with plants, while making sure it was healthy for my body.

Could you discuss your botany background a little more?

My botany work started out with dry-farming on the California coast. From there I worked with florals and started a landscape design company (that I still run today, Wildflower Farms). Most recently I’ve developed a complete obsession with cacao and a few other Central American grown plants. For the past 4 or so years I’ve been traveling down to Belize about twice a year and studying them with local farmers, herbalists and bush-medicine healers. I also study vanilla, cardamom and California natives. Thought the landscaping business, I cultivate heirlooms and organic succulents, herbs and perennials like lavender and roses.
What has been the biggest obstacle that you have had to overcome so far?

Carbs.

GA-SEP2013-44

What is your favorite product?
My favorite product is our Lime Peel + Neroli flower perfume. It’s a roll-on and super convenient to travel with. The scent is spicy and very heavy on the citrus. If I’m feeling claustrophobic or anxious, I put some on my wrists. Our Peppermint Face + Body mist works the same way and is great to toss in your purse if you have along day of driving ahead of you.

_MG_8644

How long does it take for you to make a single product?
Every product is different so I can’t give one time amount. We make everything by hand and in small batches (rarely more then 50 at a time).

How many people do you oversee and how do you keep balanced?
Between my landscape design company and Garden Apothecary (online and in our shop in Half Moon Bay, Ca), I’m working with a lot of people – and I’m not a “people person.”-  I keep everything flowing with a ton of detailed communication and I try to anticipate the needs of my employees. Wine also helps.
We ask every feature to finish this sentence: “I am worthy because ______.”

I am worthy because… I think I would just have to adjust the sentence to, “I aworthy”. No justification needed.

_MG_8677

Where would you like to see your brand in the next few years.

Of course I’d love to see an increase in sales and an abundant company – but mainly, I   want to see people get nourished, grounded and connect with my products. It’s fun to watch people light up at seeing the real plants in each of our lovely products.

_MG_4344
What advice would you give to someone pursuing their dreams? What     would your call to action be?
Get to know your subject. If you are pursuing your dreams, be sure to observe and study your desired subject inside and out, really connect and ground into what you are doing… The rest will fall into place. My old horticulture professor had a sign in his office that read, Study Nature Not Books. That was my call to action over 14 years ago.

WILL SAMSUNGS WATCH BEAT APPLE

Featured

20140813-171402.jpg

Apple, the innovator of the iPhone is set to announce the latest iteration of it’s miraculous device- the iPhone 6, on September 9. The rumor mill says that Apple MAY also introduce its upcoming smartwatch as well. True to form Samsung is racing to the finish line to release its…..5th smartwatch five days earlier, on September 4th. The Gear Solo will be Samsung’s most useful watch and it may incorporate many of the features that tech enthusiasts are hoping to see in Apple’s device.

The Gear Solo is rumored to be a fully functioning cell phone, wrapped around your wrist. It is difficult to predict how the tech world will receive the device as many were skeptical of the idea of a full phone on the wrist, when Samsung announced it’s development. However, as Apple’s device approaches the Internet has been buzzing about the possibilities. As the conceptual uses for a truly “smart” watch excite the blogging masses, Samsung’s watch/phone may find a warmer welcome.

It is worth noting that the rumored Samsung device is much more like the Apple device we’ve predicted in the pages of Worthy Magazine. If Samsung wants to ensure success, it should include a stylish bluetooth ear bud for call privacy, an NFC chip for cashless shopping and they should find a way to allow developers of home automation devices to use the Gear Solo as a proximity operated remote control for their devices. Despite the clumsy fashion Samsung has developed it’s smartwatches, they could still stumble into a compelling device that competes with the speculative concepts of Apple’s iWatch.

Designer Addie Flynn headshot -lr

MEET THE WOMAN BEHIND THE SIGNATURE FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS THAT HAVE WON THE DEVOTION OF ALL HOPELESS ROMANTICS IN SOUTH FLORIDA AND NOW CHICAGO. ARMED WITH A CUSTOM LINE OF CHOCOLATES , WINE AND FLORAL DESIGNS THAT ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO STOP LOOKING AT NO STUBBORN HEART STANDS A CHANCE

Could you please discuss the gourmet treats that can accompany the arrangement?

The chocolates are absolutely gorgeous, almost too pretty to eat! We partnered with Christopher Elbow, an amazing chocolatier who really looks at chocolate as an art form. The flavors are exclusive to Kalla, and the designs on each chocolate mirror the relationships you will find within our floral assortment. We also have wine from the Napa Valley for those who really like to indulge. The Hill Family Estate is another terrific partner who shares the same passion for wine as we do for flowers.

Congratulations on your recent opening in Chicago. What do you think has contributed to the success of Kalla?

Thank you! It’s been very exciting. I think the product is amazing and anyone who receives it loves it. So the product and experience are driving our success. The brand is aesthetically very different than anything else in the marketplace. People are drawn in by the look, and stay because of the experience.

What is your favorite flower?

Vanda orchids. They are very hard to come by, but we will be introducing them into our assortment this fall.

Where do you get inspiration from?

I draw inspiration from everywhere. I love mixing and matching prints and patterns. I love the fashion industry. Flowers, like fashion, evolve each season, so I love infusing it into our assortment.

What is the process like for making a Kalla arrangement?

We handpicked unique varieties from our favorite farms and source them direct from the grower. We wait until they are at the perfect blooms stage and handcraft each arrangement using the best flowers from the batch. The finishing touch is always our special hydration lily that allows the recipient to easily water their arrangement.

Finish this sentence: “I am worthy _____.”

Because I helped create a brand that people absolutely love.

The Best of Key West At Casa Marina and The Reach Resort

Culture, Featured

IMG_8391

The island of Key West stands as one of the premier locations in a mecca of more than 1,700 islands.  First settled in the 1880s and separated from the Florida mainland by 42 bridges, Key West is closer to Havana, Cuba than it is to Miami. Needless to say, the culture is rich, the ocean views are hypnotically beautiful and the drinks are abundant. Serene cascading currents bring soothing waves to the warm sands and carry away all remnants of stress. For two days and two nights, I found myself in the cradle of relaxation and luxury, curated by Casa Marina, 1500 Reynolds St.,  and The Reach Resort, 1435 Simonton St. (Waldorf Astoria Resorts).

Old Key West and present-day luxury converge to create a signature aesthetic that is transformative to say the least at Casa Marina. Guests dined by the ocean, enjoyed signature cocktails and took full advantage of the two oceanfront pools complete with concierge services. The large hammocks that lined the resort’s private beach, which is the largest privately owned beach in Key West, swayed in the breeze while cradling guests.

IMG_8153

As I sat down to fully take in the wondrous view of the resort, I indulged in a few lobster sliders from the resort’s restaurant, Sun-Sun Beach Bar and Grille. It was impossible to not appreciate the resort’s classically luxurious beauty. Built in 1920 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Casa Marina is a private paradise with 311 rooms. If beauty doesn’t win you over, the amenities will.

The beachside Spa al Maré, which offers exotic oils and treatments inspired by the islands, should amaze you.  Additional amenities included a fitness center, a lighted tennis court, eco-tours, on-site sailing, snorkeling, scuba diving and Jet Ski excursions. Fostering a true sense of indulgence, the resort also offers a daily breakfast buffet served on the terrace. During my stay, the sweet fruit, freshly prepared omelet and supremely delicious smoothie started my morning off perfectly. Any part of my mind that was trying to fight the idea of completely relaxing was massaged away during my Swedish massage with custom lavender oil at the resort’s beachside spa.

IMG_8138

The Reach Resort

Just a few moments away from Casa Marina was The Reach Resort, which has a total of 150 guest rooms, is an intimate oasis for couples and anyone interested in carving out their own little piece of paradise. Equipped with an attentive staff, the only private, natural-sand beach in Key West and a culinary gem—The Strip House— it is no wonder why I saw two weddings taking place during my two-day stay in Key West. The rooms at the resort take on a more contemporary feel with vaulted ceilings, wood accents and furnished balconies. I took full advantage of the iPod dock station in my room and the view while reading my hand-delivered New York Times. Each room offers a mini refrigerator, Nespresso machine and tea maker. And all guests are allowed to utilize and partake in amenities available at Casa Marina.

IMG_8266

With each property being very close to Duval Street, I was able to experience Key West in a manner that I never had before. A quick tour of Ernest Hemmingway’s home led to the inevitable exploration of local bars, namely Sloppy Joe’s (201 Duval St).       However, one trip to Blue Heaven (729 Thomas St).  for the lobster melt and signature key lime pie and I found myself unearthing yet another reason to love Key West. Another tour that I had the pleasure of taking with Historic Tours of America allowed me to fully appreciate the rich and beautiful legacy that belongs to Key West. I learned so much, and there is still more to learn. Needless to say, I can’t wait to return to Key West.
