A Worthy Swim Week

Culture, Design, Editor's Journal, Fashion, Featured, Lifestyle, Miami Life, Style

Swim Week has ended as quickly as it began leaving us with many memories of the shows that we attended. While it is almost impossible to escape the uniformity of trends and colors, we were happy to see that every designer that we saw found a clever way to stay on trend and unique to their own aesthetic. So here are a few of our observations paired with a few pictures of our favorite looks from our favorite shows.

1. Sinesia Karol

Location: The Setai Hotel

Day: Friday July 17th 8 p.m.

Possibly our favorite show. Sinesia brought us the best of summer with her gorgeous couture swim suits and resort wear. She embraced the warm purple and golds of the upcoming season but she also introduced light warm blues pairing beautiful textures with luxurious fabrics. We sat among her friends and family as even they whispered:

“I think that this is her best collection yet.”

Being that the designer is a prominent fixture in our current issue, we can’t help but admit that we love everything that the designer provides in all of her collections. True to her aesthetic, it was not about shocking her audience, which consisted of the who’s who, with loud colors and patterns. The poetry is always in the collection’s design. Her looks were effortless, elegant, enchanting and yet intricate. Her closing piece left us all in an editorial summer daze.  Like we could imagine having that suit on the digital pages of Worthy right now.

2. Keva J

Location: The Ritz-Carlton Hotel South Beach

Day: Saturday July 18th 2-4 p.m.

The upcoming season seems to be a sharp cry from last season, which opted for dark colors, textured swim suits with long sleeves. For the upcoming season we can look forward to vibrant colors we are happy that purple and gold stayed and that black will never depart. Keva J gave us all the colors of the upcoming season. Her unique signature was that her suits were layered and cut to perfection with perfectly placed muted gray and white swim pieces. We lost count of the gasps of excitement her audience accounted for. Did we mention that Eva Marcelle was in attendance and loved the pieces?

3. Liliana Montoya

Location: Funksion Tent

Day: Thursday: 6 p.m.

What we love about this designer is her ability to make every collection unique and signature to a specific season. What we saw last year was very different from what we saw this year. Down to the cut of her suits and her color choices. Her looks were the perfect mermaid oasis complete with Dash of Flash tattoos. Vibrant, intrinsic and dreamy are the words we would use to describe her collection.

4. Lila Nikole

Location: 1 Hotel South Beach

Day: Sunday  6 p.m.

Calling in one of our favorite worthy women of 2014, Lila Nikole offered up a show that hypnotically trendy and signature.  We loved the conscious choice to showcase one piece swim suits paired with playful, fashion forward sneakers from Kruzin footware.

5. Anita Rincon

Location:  Riviera Hotel South Beach

Day: Sunday 2-4 p.m.

This was the collection for the curvy and confident woman. Purples, dark greens and golds glistened in the summer haze by the pool at the Riviera Hotel in South Beach. The designer paired her looks with one of a kind accessories from Erica Mena’s accessory collection, HER. We loved every detail.

IT’S THAT WORTH IT TO ME

Editor's Journal, Featured

Latina actress Genesis Rodriguez is the newest spokesperson for  the campaign called “It’s That Worth It To Me.” The campaign is a collaboration between L’Oréal and Melanoma Research Alliance. It is essentially a Public Health Campaign and Social Media Call-to-Action that drives Melanoma Awareness, raises funding for research and encourages sun protection and sunless tanning.

This past Thursday an amazing panel of women spoke at the Thompson Hotel in South Beach to discuss the importance of protecting your skin and to raise awareness about Melanoma. The panel consisted of Miami-based doctor Flor Mayoral, M.D, of Mayoral Dermatology, Danielle Macaluso, AVP of Communications for L’Oreal Paris USA, as well Genesis.  According to the campaign, melanoma is the most common cancer in women under 40.

“Currently melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and one of the most common cancers in women under 40 years old in the United States. The first line of defense in helping to reduce the risk of developing melanoma is by wearing broad spectrum UVA and UVB SPF protection. L’Oréal Paris, a leading global beauty brand, and Melanoma Research Alliance (MRA), the leading private funder of melanoma research, announced today the launch of It’s THAT Worth It To Me. This social media campaign encourages women to donate 15 social media seconds by sharing why SPF protection or using sunless tanner is worth it to protect their skin, their beauty and their life. For every social share, L’Oréal Paris will donate $1 to MRA to fund the L’Oréal Paris – MRA Team Science Award Research Grant, up to $250,000 in 2015.”

How To Participate in It’s THAT Worth It to Me by Donating 15 Social Media Seconds

Beginning on May 4th, “Melanoma Monday,” and through Labor Day on September 7th, people can participate in the campaign by following three steps:

  1. Create a 15 second video or photo sharing with their social community why SPF protection or using sunless tanner is worth it.
  2. Share the video or photo via Insta-video/Instagram, Facebook and/or Twitter with hashtag #ItsTHATWorthIt
  3. Get your social media community involved to further spread the word by tagging three friends in your post.

A STAR-MAKING VENTURE: THE WORKSHOP AT MACY’S GEARS UP FOR ITS 5TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION

Culture, Editor's Journal, News

WWD-Chair

After four successful courses, The Workshop at Macy’s, the retailer’s innovative “business of fashion” program begins accepting applications today for the 5th Anniversary class of entrepreneurs, who are poised for bigger retail success. In the Spring of 2011, Macy’s created this one-of-a-kind business of retail development program with the aim of mentoring and fostering growth within up-and-coming minority and women-owned businesses. This industry-first initiative has resulted in a number of new vendor relationships with Macy’s and has created a pipeline of enterprises that the company can tap for future product opportunities.

“We are very excited to kick-off the application process for the next Workshop class,” said Shawn Outler, Macy’s group vice-president of Leased Businesses, Vendor Collaboration and Multicultural Business Development. “This program was created to develop minority and women-owned businesses that make great products, but needed additional real-world knowledge and expertise to successfully manage and maintain a thriving business with a large-scale nationwide retailer such as Macy’s. Going into our fifth year, we are truly encouraged by the results so far with a number of graduates of the program now providing goods as Macy’s vendors and a host more in the pipeline for future opportunities. This program helps reinforce Macy’s long-standing commitment to vendor diversity and to providing customers with unique goods and services that meet their lifestyles. We can’t wait to see what the new applicants have to offer.”

The Workshop at Macy’s is a four and a half-day intensive training course developed by a consortium of experts from Macy’s Learning & Development, Macy’s Multicultural Merchandising and Vendor Development, Babson College, the nation’s leading business school for entrepreneurship, and with select Macy’s merchants and vendors. The specially designed business development curriculum is aimed at minority and women-owned retail businesses that make department store products and are poised to grow beyond self-distribution or low volume retailing. The goal of this annual program is to help create a pipeline of viable enterprises that will grow to become successful partners within Macy’s own vendor community often bringing unique goods and trend perspectives to stores across the country.

The Workshop at Macy’s allows selected participants to collaborate with fellow aspiring vendors, gain access to industry experts and solicit one-on-one business coaching. The course work includes classes on merchandising and assortment planning, marketing, EDI, financial management, and access to capital.

From intimate apparel to jewelry and cosmetics, the Workshop at Macy’s vendors all conclude that the program helped them identify opportunities and put into practice policies that have led to successful and long-term growth. Psychelia Terry, President and Founder of Urban Intimates, stated, “I found the Workshop at Macy’s to be more than just a ‘workshop,’ it was life changing. Every team that worked with us demonstrated unparalleled knowledge about retail and wholesale partnerships. They sincerely cared about our business and our future success as a brand and company. We will be forever grateful for the 700% revenue increase that we have seen companywide because of the training, hand-holding and detailed instructions we learned from the Workshop at Macy’s.” She added, “Our company now successfully partners with Macy’s and other retailers in the US because of the information we learned and put into practice during our training.”

Alex Woo, President and Designer of “Alex Woo,” a fine jewelry vendor concurred, “The Workshop at Macy’s provided an amazing support network of industry experts and leaders in the field of fashion and retail like nowhere else. As a Made in New York brand, the chance to work with the world’s largest and most iconic store was an opportunity that no one should pass up!”

Built as a long-term program, the Workshop team is in constant communication with current vendors and past participants as they progress through the opportunities outlined during the coursework. Mateo Bijoux, a graduate and Macy’s men’s furnishings vendor under the “Mateo New York” brand, referred to this ongoing open dialogue and follow-through, when he stated, “The Workshop at Macy’s was and is the foster father of my business! It has made me a sharper entrepreneur!”

New applications will be accepted beginning on October 7, 2014. To be eligible, an applicant must be the majority (51% or more of equity) owner, co-owner or otherwise have operational control (per applicable status rules) of a business that has been in operation for a least two consecutive years and be its primary decision maker.  Eligible applications will include a 250-word biographical statement, look book/line sheets or images of product including costs, resumes on all owners, financial statements for the business for 2 years, fall within the minority and women-owned definition of the program and provide verification of the business as a legal entity (i.e. Corporation, LLC, etc.), among other requirements. Applications must be submitted online or postmarked by February 1, 2015 by 11:59pm EST. All information including full program requirements are available online atwww.macysinc.com/workshop. All eligible applications will be reviewed and select applicants will be asked to attend an in-person interview. Final selections will be made after all prospective candidates are interviewed. The program will take place in New York City in late April/early May of 2015.

Friends or Networking Buddies?

Culture, Editor's Journal, Editorial, News
FRIENDS?

So you are an entrepreneur. Networking is crucial to your success. You attend a few mixers, events and possibly volunteer and somewhere in the midst of your constant planning, events and cocktails you meet other entrepreneurs who mirror your zeal and work ethic. Are you long lost soul mates (BFF’s) or are you simply networking buddies?

Hopefully after reading this article, you will have more of an idea.

Worthy Definitions:  Just so we are all the same page these are the definitions that we are working with for this article.

BFF’s- Maybe not besties but we are loosely using this terms to describe a person you feel like you can trust. You can talk business and personal life with them. They are supportive beyond a point of it being convenient and beneficial for themselves.

Networking buddy: This is someone who you can talk to for hours about business but after the engaging dialogue about brand recognition ends there is very little to discuss. Their network however is very useful to you. This is still someone you can enjoy a nice cocktail with and causally discuss your company with. But when you need a break they may not be the best person for you to call.

friends2

So you are attending your monthly young business professionals mixer. The drinks are complimentary. The hors d’oeuvres are heavenly and you just made a connection with a fellow entrepreneur. You gab over how you don’t want “True Blood” to end and how “American Horror Story” with steady of stream of “Scandal” will sustain you but never complete you. You notice the immediate connection and vow to keep in touch. There is something different about this vow. It’s not the standard chemically euphoric exchange of business cards and promises brought to you in part by a utopian atmosphere sustained by cocktails and a chic atmosphere.

You meet again hesitant about whether or not the chemistry will be there but to your relief and surprise, it is. You begin hanging out almost every weekend. Then there is the standard exchange that can only come after hanging out at least three times.

“It is so hard to find another woman who is on the same entrepreneurial track with the same level of commitment. It’s embarrassing to admit but I don’t have a lot of female friends.”

In that instant, you believe you are bound to each other fueled by a common purpose and ultimate goal. But then the most unexpected thing comes out of nowhere. It’s called life. It is in those moments that you know who your friends actually are. Friendship is about so much more than a great conversation. We don’t mean to sound like guys, but friendship is about action. You will know who your real friends are by how willing they are to match their actions with their words. So here a few signs to help you figure out the nature of your relationship

Signs that you are networking buddies

1. You have a huge upcoming project that you need help organizing and your buddy is right there helping you with your guest list and finding a way to have their company be on board. When it comes to the to-do lists, budgeting and running errands not so much. (Please note that this could also be because she has her own projects and growing to do list) This instance is not a deal breaker.

2. You are determined to make the most out of next month. So it is time to make a vision board. Your networking buddy is there with champagne. Together you ladies construct the most epic vision board ever. Once the champagne runs dry there is an uncomfortable silence. You ladies exchange your goodbye’s.

3. Whenever you need to talk business even at 3 a.m. your networking buddy is there. But when the conversation takes a different turn for the personal issues, something comes up and she has to go.

Signs that you have a friend

1. You need to talk business and personal obstacles. You can’t afford the usual restaurant that you and buddy love. You call your friend anyway and they take care of the bill and listen to your problems and offers some really great advice that you will not use. Or if you are both running short on field trip funds you hang out at one of your places, launch the Netflix and nibble on a few snacks. You share your problems and offer encouragement and accountability to one another.

2. You have an event that you are trying to plan. You have no clue what you are doing but you are determined to succeed. Your friend is there to assist in the planning, list making (both guest lists and to-do lists) and makes it a priority to attend and promote your event.

3. You are growing and your expenses at the moment seem to be greater than you profit. The financial difference is very small but you just don’t have it. Your friend who is doing a little better makes your union even more serious and makes a small investment in you and even introduces you to their network to help you. If this happens, congratulations you have an entrepreneur wife. This is an amazing luxury not something to expect from all of your friends. Everyone has their own expenses too.

The main indication of whether or not you are dealing with a friend or a networking buddy is whether they are willing to be there for you even when it is not convenient for them. The contribution does not need to always or ever need to be monetary.  The greatest sacrifice is time and effort. Are they trying to make you better person professionally and personally?  Are they a positive encouraging voice in your entrepreneurial journey and your life?

The best advice our magazine has ever gotten from a networking buddy is that you can always make your money back, but you can never get your time back. Once you spend it, it’s gone.

Hopefully this short list helps.

American Horror Story Coming To Florida

Culture, Editor's Journal, News

Another editorial favorite is FX’s American Horror Story. There is debate among the team as to which season was the best but what we can agree on is that it is between the second season and the third season. So imagine our excitement when the theme of the new season was revealed via Twitter and then imagine the extreme level of euphoria we experienced when the possibility that the new season might be coming to Florida.

For the readers who might be new to the magazine, or just not familiar, the magazine is based in South Florida.

According to EW, season four will be set in 1950s Jupiter with plenty of returning familiar faces. Jessica Lange will reprise her utterly-fabulous role as star, this time portraying a “German ex-pat who is managing one of the last freak shows in the U.S.” At her side, a trusty gang signaling the continuation of Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, and Frances Conroy. Fan favorites Emma Roberts and Denis O’Hare are also in talks to return.  Words can not express how reeked we are about Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett returning.

This latest cover of Beyonce’s hit single Drunk in Love is near and dear to our Frank Sinatra and Count Basie loving Editor-in-Chief, Ju’lia Samuels. This cover takes on a swing-inspired sound with Cristina Gatti singing lead. The creators of the cover, Scott Bradlee and Post Modern Jukebox Band  have acquired a loyal following of fans with their knack for transforming pop songs into other genres, such as bluegrass, swing and doo-wop.

Reportedly, Beyonce loved the cover. She even shared it on her page.
