Concept For Samsung’s New Gear A Smartwatch

The Tech World is anticipating the release of Samsung’s latest smartwatch at the company’s upcoming event-Samsung Unpacked on August 15th. Thus far, Samsung has released a confused offering of 6 different iterations for it’s Galaxy Gear Smartwatch line. The next version of the watch has been code-named The Orbis because the device will be round and Samsung is betting that “Roundness” will be the killer feature that drives customers to buy into the smartwatch category. There are however, many other features that would be more compelling than the shape of the device.

If Samsung wants to catch-up to the Apple Watch it should at least match the functionality of the Apple Watch which despite being marketed as a fitness device is a remote control for smart devices.

Samsung is a uniquely integrated company that produces products in every category ranging from Televisions, Refrigerators, and Computers to Coffee Makers. Whereas Apple and other smartwatch makers must rely on third parties to develop apps that link smart devices to their respective watches, Samsung can create the smart-home ecosystem internally. If Samsung wants to blow the competition away–it should (but probably won’t) demonstrate a watch that not only serves up notifications and masters mobile payments but also activates the coffee machine downstairs, unlocks doors, turns the lights on and off, streams footage from home security cameras, hosts a truly smart assistant and flaunts an “always on” display that perpetually shows the time. Whereas Apple has had a slow roll out of these features, leaving consumers to stumble upon them and piece them together, Samsung can release them all at once as an integrated whole.

Rumors have suggested that Samsung will offer three versions of the device. If this is true those versions should center around offering consumers a wifi/bluetooth version that extends the functionality of their smartphones (which should not be limited to Samsung Phones) and a standalone version that serves as an independent cell phone with it’s own cellular connection. Some consumers, like myself would relish ditching the 5.5 inch phablets in our pockets.

Lastly, the design of all smartwatches, including Apple’s watch has truly been lacking. Samsung could leapfrog the competition with a great design. The rumors about The Orbis have suggested that Samsung is duplicating Apple’s “Digital Crown” by creating a rotating bezel that will allow users to navigate the device’s operating system. A superior design, served up by the internet via enthusiastic fans extends the company’s Edge-concept to the Smartwatch. The result is a sleek and unique device that could boost battery life by displaying time and notifications on the side of the device without draining battery life to power the entire screen. This would answer a primary complaint of Apple Watch users.

Most of what we have suggested probably won’t be offered by Samsung. The company is unwisely banking on “Round” as a killer feature when functionality should be their focus. Smartwatches remain a tough sell for consumers. Smartwatches are not a “NEED” and changing the shape of the device will not persuade consumers otherwise. Samsung has yet another chance to get it right…….but they probably won’t!

A Worthy Swim Week

Swim Week has ended as quickly as it began leaving us with many memories of the shows that we attended. While it is almost impossible to escape the uniformity of trends and colors, we were happy to see that every designer that we saw found a clever way to stay on trend and unique to their own aesthetic. So here are a few of our observations paired with a few pictures of our favorite looks from our favorite shows.

1. Sinesia Karol

Location: The Setai Hotel

Day: Friday July 17th 8 p.m.

Possibly our favorite show. Sinesia brought us the best of summer with her gorgeous couture swim suits and resort wear. She embraced the warm purple and golds of the upcoming season but she also introduced light warm blues pairing beautiful textures with luxurious fabrics. We sat among her friends and family as even they whispered:

“I think that this is her best collection yet.”

Being that the designer is a prominent fixture in our current issue, we can’t help but admit that we love everything that the designer provides in all of her collections. True to her aesthetic, it was not about shocking her audience, which consisted of the who’s who, with loud colors and patterns. The poetry is always in the collection’s design. Her looks were effortless, elegant, enchanting and yet intricate. Her closing piece left us all in an editorial summer daze.  Like we could imagine having that suit on the digital pages of Worthy right now.

 

2. Keva J

Location: The Ritz-Carlton Hotel South Beach

Day: Saturday July 18th 2-4 p.m.

 

The upcoming season seems to be a sharp cry from last season, which opted for dark colors, textured swim suits with long sleeves. For the upcoming season we can look forward to vibrant colors we are happy that purple and gold stayed and that black will never depart. Keva J gave us all the colors of the upcoming season. Her unique signature was that her suits were layered and cut to perfection with perfectly placed muted gray and white swim pieces. We lost count of the gasps of excitement her audience accounted for. Did we mention that Eva Marcelle was in attendance and loved the pieces?

 

3. Liliana Montoya

Location: Funksion Tent

Day: Thursday: 6 p.m.

What we love about this designer is her ability to make every collection unique and signature to a specific season. What we saw last year was very different from what we saw this year. Down to the cut of her suits and her color choices. Her looks were the perfect mermaid oasis complete with Dash of Flash tattoos. Vibrant, intrinsic and dreamy are the words we would use to describe her collection.

 

4. Lila Nikole

Location: 1 Hotel South Beach

Day: Sunday  6 p.m.

Calling in one of our favorite worthy women of 2014, Lila Nikole offered up a show that hypnotically trendy and signature.  We loved the conscious choice to showcase one piece swim suits paired with playful, fashion forward sneakers from Kruzin footware.

5. Anita Rincon

Location:  Riviera Hotel South Beach

Day: Sunday 2-4 p.m.

This was the collection for the curvy and confident woman. Purples, dark greens and golds glistened in the summer haze by the pool at the Riviera Hotel in South Beach. The designer paired her looks with one of a kind accessories from Erica Mena’s accessory collection, HER. We loved every detail.

Latina actress Genesis Rodriguez is the newest spokesperson for  the campaign called “It’s That Worth It To Me.” The campaign is a collaboration between L’Oréal and Melanoma Research Alliance. It is essentially a Public Health Campaign and Social Media Call-to-Action that drives Melanoma Awareness, raises funding for research and encourages sun protection and sunless tanning.

This past Thursday an amazing panel of women spoke at the Thompson Hotel in South Beach to discuss the importance of protecting your skin and to raise awareness about Melanoma. The panel consisted of Miami-based doctor Flor Mayoral, M.D, of Mayoral Dermatology, Danielle Macaluso, AVP of Communications for L’Oreal Paris USA, as well Genesis.  According to the campaign, melanoma is the most common cancer in women under 40.

“Currently melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and one of the most common cancers in women under 40 years old in the United States. The first line of defense in helping to reduce the risk of developing melanoma is by wearing broad spectrum UVA and UVB SPF protection. L’Oréal Paris, a leading global beauty brand, and Melanoma Research Alliance (MRA), the leading private funder of melanoma research, announced today the launch of It’s THAT Worth It To Me. This social media campaign encourages women to donate 15 social media seconds by sharing why SPF protection or using sunless tanner is worth it to protect their skin, their beauty and their life. For every social share, L’Oréal Paris will donate $1 to MRA to fund the L’Oréal Paris – MRA Team Science Award Research Grant, up to $250,000 in 2015.”

How To Participate in It’s THAT Worth It to Me by Donating 15 Social Media Seconds

Beginning on May 4th, “Melanoma Monday,” and through Labor Day on September 7th, people can participate in the campaign by following three steps:

  1. Create a 15 second video or photo sharing with their social community why SPF protection or using sunless tanner is worth it. 
  2. Share the video or photo via Insta-video/Instagram, Facebook and/or Twitter with hashtag #ItsTHATWorthIt   
  3. Get your social media community involved to further spread the word by tagging three friends in your post.

Kyemah McEntyre, a senior at Cecily Tyson School of Performing Arts, in East Orange, New Jersey has been making waves with her handmade prom dress. In a sea of Met Gala inspired prom dresses, McEntyre broke the internet with her sense of originality and boldness. One of her Twitter captions that has been making headlines eloquently read:

“This is for always being labeled as, “ugly” or “angry”. Thank God, stereotypes are just opinions. – Kyemah McEntyre✊”
McEntyre is going to be attending Parsons School of Design in the fall. We have no problem admitting that we can’t wait to see what she shows us next. She shared on her Instagram that she draws inspiration from all cultures.
“I’m Kyemah McEntyre, I am 18 years old and I am undoubtedly of African Descent. As an artist I have a completely different point of view compared to most individuals. I am extremely analytical and observant. Throughout the world, we have people who do not notice each others essence and humanity. We Stunt our collective spiritual growth by allowing assumptions and stereotypes to cloud our mind and thus our physical reality. We let these negative ideas get the best of us, and in turn a world of isolation is manifested by our lack of sensitivity and desire to sympathize with each other. This results in a world in which people live within the confines of their own space, isolated from each other and separated from the rest of the world.Sometimes we get trapped in our own prejudice ways. We don’t notice how the idea of a particular type of person changes the way we live our lives. LOCAL MARGATE RESIDENT SURPRISED WITH BRAND NEW AUDI A3

Friday, June 5th, Roy “Blake” Hannah, local Margate resident and United Way of Broward County donor, was surprised with a brand new 2015 Audi A3thanks to United Way of Broward County and Holman Automotive Group.  Broward County residents who donated a minimum of $260 (only $5 per week) to United Way of Broward County were entered into a drawing of over 10,000 entrants. Hannah’s employer, AT&T, has participated in a Workplace Campaign for United Way of Broward County for the last 19 years.

 

For nearly 15 years, United Way of Broward County has given a new car to one lucky donor thanks to the generosity of the Holman Automotive Group. Hannah’s name was entered into a 2015 Audi A3 giveaway with thousands of other entries from more than 200 South Florida companies who give to United Way of Broward County.

Highlights from Ciara’s Vegas Performance

Friday night, international recording artist Ciara gave a flawless full-length concert in the middle of Drai’s Nightclub at The Cromwell while boyfriend and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson danced the night away to her greatest hits, from her original worldwide smash “Goodies” to her latest acclaimed chart-topper “I Bet.”

We selected some of our favorite shots from the weekend performance.

The sea of fans at the 65,000 square foot rooftop nightclub were treated to songs from each of Ciara’s albums including “1, 2 Step,” “Like A Boy,” “Body Party,” “Oh,” and many others. Three highlights included an earnest performance of “I Bet,” a heart-pounding remix of “Goodies,” and her own special take on Missy Elliot’s “Lose Control,” which Ciara was originally featured on. Rarely taking a moment to slow down, Ciara’s masterful and iconic dance moves were in full effect for the entire duration of her show.
